Real-time PCR Testing: A Useful Tool for Differentiating Between MRSA and MSSA

Real-time PCR is a rapid and accurate method for identifying MRSA and MSSA infections in clinical settings. It can detect the mecA gene with high sensitivity and specificity, allowing for the differentiation between MRSA and MSSA within hours. This is important for guiding treatment decisions and preventing the spread of these bacteria in healthcare settings.


Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that has become resistant to several types of antibiotics, including methicillin. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) is a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that is susceptible to methicillin. Differentiating between MRSA and MSSA is important for choosing the appropriate treatment and preventing the spread of these bacteria.


Real-time PCR is a molecular diagnostic technique that uses fluorescent probes to detect and quantify specific DNA sequences in a sample. If only the mecA gene is detected, but Staphylococcus aureus is not detected, then it suggests that there may be another bacterial species present that harbors the mecA gene. In this case, additional testing may be necessary to determine the identity of the bacteria carrying the mecA gene.


On the other hand, if Staphylococcus aureus is detected, but the mecA gene is not detected. It suggests that the Staphylococcus aureus strain is susceptible to methicillin and is MSSA.


However, if both Staphylococcus aureus and the mecA gene are detected, it indicates that the Staphylococcus aureus strain is MRSA and is resistant to methicillin.


Therefore, detecting the mecA gene along with Staphylococcus aureus identification is necessary for the differentiation between MRSA and MSSA using real-time PCR.


Real-time PCR testing can also be used to rapidly identify other antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). This allows for the implementation of appropriate infection control measures and the selection of appropriate antibiotics for treatment.
